Unit 5 – 1.1

Connor and Jorgie

We Recorded two performers called Connor and Jorgie, they where an acoustic and singing act. We recorded vocals and an acoustic guitar, so for the guitar We used a DI input as this would give us a flat sound but it would act more as a support for the mic recording as the DI sounds more digital recorded, this works well in the recording because when you record the guitar neck and bass separately and pair them along with the DI you get a very realistic and good sound. Then and for the vocals we set up a Rhode NT2000 as this would give us the clearest recording and the best sound, we also put a pop filter on it to stop all of the popping sounds coming from the singer getting through.

When sorting out the Mix’s for the headphones we each performer asked what they would like to hear and the guitarist wanted to hear his guitar and the vocals but the vocals of the performer where to be slightly louder, then he asked to put small amounts of reverb to the send on his channel. The singer wanted to hear the guitar but he also wanted to hear his vocals loud as well and he also wanted reverb on the vocals.

For the guitar we had to check the phase because we both had the guitar neck mic and the guitar body mic close together and we had to make sure they where not phasing together, this would lead to the sound waves overlapping and sounding awful.

When we used EQ on the guitar we where able to get rid of the unwanted low end, we did this because it would sit better in the mix. We also used EQ on the vocals for the same reason (getting rid of the low end), this was effective because it helped get rid of the unwanted high and low end and it made it sit better in the mix.

Rock Band

We Recorded a band, they where a rock band. We recorded vocals, guitar and a drum kit. So for the guitar We used a DI input as this would give us a flat sound. We also recorded the guitar through a guitar amp so we got a real rock and roll kinda crunchy sound, this works well in the recording because when you record the guitar. Then and for the vocals we set up a Rhode NT2000 as this would give us a clear recording and clean cut vocals, we also put a pop filter on it to stop all of the popping sounds coming from the singer getting through.

We didn’t record the band at the same time so we didn’t need to use headphones apart from when we had the vocals we had to have the drums and the guitar running through the headphones at similar levels.

The only phase we had to check was with the overheads for the drums because if we left the phase there would be an overlapping in sound waves.

When we decided to use EQ on the guitar to roll the low end off because it was how the artist wanted and we also rolled off the high end to get rid of the unwanted tinny noises.
