Unit 1 – 1.1

Track 1 –  Isaac Hayes – ikes rap

What does it sound like?

  • The tempo is slow and steady
  • The melody is the core of the song and it stands out the most out of all the instruments
  • The drum beat is also very recognizable within the track as it gives you an idea of the tempo of the song
  • In the background the violins slowly fade in and out throughout the song

Do vocals have an effect on them?

  • There are reverb on the vocals through the song as it makes him sound like he is in a gigantic hall, this makes the music sound real like its been recorded in an actually hall rather than a studio

What production techniques are used?

  • It slowly starts off with an organ
  • A rim shot is used on the snare and then they have used reverb on it to match the vocals on making it sounds like its in a hall
  • At the end the song pans out, this makes the track sound more relaxing as it doesn’t have a sudden stop, this ensures a smooth outro to the song

Track 2 –  Alessia Cara – Here

What does it sound like?

  • The tempo is faster however it is still a steady beat
  • The volume of the instruments sound louder than the original track
  • also this version hame more vocal singing than the other one however the instruments that are used are still the same

Do vocals have an effect on them?

  • There aren’t much reverb on the vocals through the song this gives the vocals a dry effect however there is still a small amount of reverb used on the vocals

What production techniques are used?

  • It slowly starts off with an organ and there is a high past filter on so it makes there bass hit harder than better
  • the producer has also decided to get someone to sing over it as this ensures mainstreamers to listen to the music as it now has a more pop genre along with the solo rap piece

Track 3-  Eminem – venom

What does it sound like?

  • Venom has a very abstract and dark sound because of the synths this then makes it sound very dark and it give it a eerie vibe.
  • the drums on the tracks have a relatively simple beat as it has repeating high hats and 3 kicks within the loop, the drums are joined alongside repeating claps
  • the vocals are usual Eminem with him singing at one point then he switches to the iconic rapping he does

Do vocals have an effect on them?

  • the vocals have a slight reverb on them, this is used to make the song sound more real otherwise it would sound like it was just made and shoved togeather

What production techniques are used?

  • It starts with drums slowly building up along with an abstract synth, then the drop hits
  • What the producers are doing is smart because mixing Eminem and alien type synths is good because it attracts two different types of audiences and also it was good to mix Eminem and this track because it is different from all the other styles out there.

Track 4-  Swarmz – Lyca

What does it sound like?

  • Lyca has a very Caribbean vibe to it with all of the bells and the xylophone, the sound is very happy and full of energy
  • the instruments used are a xylophone a bell a clap a kick a snare and a baseline

Do vocals have an effect on them?

  • the vocals have reverse on to make sure it sits in within the track well, however some parts have a big echo on the end of a verse this makes it sound better as its more soothing to listen to it when its repeated

What production techniques are used?

  • it starts off with the bells then muffled vocals come into play this is because a big pass filter is used
  • some instruments come in and out for example the bells appear more at the beginning of the song than the end, this makes sure that the track isn’t completely repetitive.
