Unit 3 – 1.1

Sound Engineer

I am interested in being a sound engineer because I like the idea of setting up equipment in the studio and for bands who preform live gigs. Basic training required for a sound engineer would be basic first aid in case a performer or colleague is injured you are able to assist the injured person. An average salary for a live sound engineer is £56,000, this is above the average, the average is £20,00 – £25,000. One way to protect yourself about not getting paid is to make sure you get your employer to sign a contract so incase they refuse to pay you, when you go to court you can say they signed the contract and they have to pay you. A live sound engineer are usually sole traders selling there service. The application process for being a sound engineer dosen’t really exist, you just have to put yourself out there and ask venues or bands if they need a sound engineer. One effective way of putting yourself out there and getting employed would be social media by requesting work by either contacting the company or band, however you could also get around by building a fanbase with all of you regular updates and posts on social media sites such as: Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat and Facebook.

Producer

A producer would be a good career path choice because I like to create music of any genre. As it goes for basic training there isn’t any really, minimum to be successful you would need to know how a studio works, for example how to record instruments and also if you create musically electronically you need to know your way around your software. An average wage for a producer is around £45,000 to £100,000. Some examples of successful producers are Dr Dre and Kanye West, both of these successful producers are now Multi-millionaire’s from producing young good talent. Good examples of producing company’s are Def Jam and Death Row Records both of these are owned but Kanye West and Dr Dre. When becoming a producer there is no real way to apply for a job there it’s more of a do it yourself process by making your own music, and also to be a producer you will need to own some sort of studio either it be home studio or one in a town. To earn money from being a producer you will need to put flyers or advertise via social media such as Facebook, Twitter and instagram so people would want to come in and record.

Mix and Mastering Engineer

Id like to be a Mixing and Mastering engineer because id like to be the one who makes the track good enough to be out there available for people to listen to. Qualification wise you would usually help to have studied music technology at collage and if you would like to take it further you would you could go off to university and study music technology there. The potential earnings for being a mixing and mastering engineer is around £100 an hour for a good one and yearly in 2011 the average earning potential was £56,000 yearly. Some top quality mixing and mastering engineers are Bob Katz and Steve Hoffman and they have both won grammies for their exceptional ear in music. There is no such way as to apply for a role in mixing and mastering you would more just put yourself out there and promote yourself as a product to people and when you het hired update your social media.
